Frequently Asked Questions

Fayetteville’s City Planning Commission is a volunteer, appointed body made up of local residents. Its role is to review development proposals—including rezoning requests, annexations, conditional use permit applications—and to make recommendations to the City Council. Additionally, it can grant final approval on subdivision and large‑scale development plans. In essence, the Planning Commission handles detailed, planning‑specific review and advises the elected body on zoning, master land use, and subdivision issues.

The Fayetteville City Council is the city’s elected legislative body under a mayor–council government. The Council sets city policy through passing ordinances and resolutions, determines the city budget, and appoints members to boards and commissions—including the Planning Commission. Ultimately, while the Commission offers technical and localized guidance, the City Council has final authority to adopt zoning changes, approve (or override) Commission recommendations, and establish broader development policy.

Planning Commission meetings are held on the second and fourth Monday of each month at 5:30 PM. These are in-person at City Hall Room 219 and also accessible via Zoom.

Agenda sessions for planning commission are held one to two weeks before the regular meetings. These typically occur on a Thursday afternoon at 4:30pm. Location is subject to change based on room availability.

City Council meetings are held the first and third Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m., unless rescheduled due to holidays or elections. These are in-person at City Hall Room 219 and also accessible via Zoom.

City Council agenda sessions are held on the Monday before the regular City Council Meeting (usually the week prior), at 4:30 PM at City Hall.

City Council Meetings are the formal public meetings where agenda items are debated, votes are taken, and public comments are allowed on both new business and public hearings. The Mayor reads items, staff and applicants present, Council members deliberate, and residents may speak (public comment is limited to 3 minutes per item per person).

The purpose of an agenda session is to review and finalize the upcoming meeting’s agenda—Council members discuss which items will appear, and any additions not included in the Tentative Agenda are considered. Public comment is not permitted during this session but is very informative to hear discussion about certain topics.

While in person attendance is very impactful, it is not required. All meetings can be attended via Zoom. However, you must register in advance to be given a link to the zoom call (Instructions are located here https://www.fayetteville-ar.gov/3949/Zoom-Meeting-Instructions). Speaking is not mandatory, but if you wish to speak on zoom, you'll need to register and mention what item you wish to speak on. If you are unable to attend in person or via zoom, emails are also very impactful but need to be sent at least 48 hours before the meeting.

Thank you so much for supporting Fayetteville!
